Sardines spotted, but beach still a no-go area, warns city
The city has not altered its beach regulations, meaning that no one, other than licensed fishermen, is allowed on the beaches during the national lockdown.

This year’s sardine run is around the corner but stringent rules may prevent the public from participating.

Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson said the city has not altered its beach regulations, meaning that no one, other than licensed fishermen, is allowed on the beaches during the national lockdown.

Every year during the winter months of June and July, sardines swim upstream to the east coast to take advantage of the cooler winds.

The event usually draws crowds along the coast who flock to view the spectacle.
This week, dozens of people visited Ramsgate Beach on the south coast, where hundreds of sardines were netted.

Greg Thompson, Head of Operations at the KZN Sharks Board said that due to national lockdown regulations all shark safety gear was removed from Durban beaches.
“As a result, no sardine surveillance flights, or operational boating activity has been permitted. Therefore, no physical monitoring of sardine activity has been undertaken by the board,? he said. Thompson said there were sightings of sardine shoals between Pennington and Mwalume on Tuesday but there is no telling if or when they will reach Durban beaches,” he said.
