Durban cancer warrior walks for awareness

The public is encouraged to support Gisele by sponsoring her R10 for every kilometer she walks.

BREAST cancer warrior, Gisele Braam Houpe, will take on a 5km walk on the Durban beachfront on Sunday, 9 August, to raise funds and awareness for PinkDrive.

Gisele will start her walk, aided by a walker, at 9am outside Joe Cools, and will be accompanied by two friends, Janice Benecke from PinkDrive and Debbie Hall.

Gisele, who is an inspiration to many, said she gives thanks every morning for being blessed with a new dawn, while her fight still continues.

A lumpectomy to a double mastectomy, chemo, and now having to also deal with side effects from treatment, however, as Gisele says, ‘this girl has still got fight left.’

“Along with my precious friends Janice and Debbie, we decided to do this 5km walk to bring awareness about breast cancer and PinkDrive. Due to a milk stroke eight months ago that left me with a ‘floppy’ left leg, I am tackling this 5km walk with a walker. Having been an athlete all my life, this is definitely going to be my slowest 5km, but the most important,” she said.

PinkDrive is the indispensable, tangible breast cancer public benefit organisation (PBO) powering South Africa’s first mobile PinkDrive Mammography Unit and PinkDrive Educational Unit through the country, driving home the fact that ‘early detection will help prolong a life’.

Janice said: “I have had the pleasure of knowing Gisele for the past six years and have grown to love her. She is such a strong woman and is an inspiration to many. Please support Gisele with her quest to bring awareness to cancer and to PinkDrive. I will be doing this walk with her and will be loading photos at each km that Gisele reaches. You won’t be able to miss us as Gisele will have her walker with pink branding around it. So, if you are in the area come and have a selfie taken with us.”

The women will be taking the message of awareness and early detection to as many as possible, and encourage the public to support Gisele by sponsoring her R10 for every kilometer she walks, with all funds going to PinkDrive.
