Concerns raised over state of Durban’s popular Sunken Gardens
The public has complained about the shocking condition of the Sunken Gardens - a popular tourist attraction.
FOLLOWING complaints from the public about the condition of the Sunken Gardens at the Beachfront Amphitheatre, DA eThekwini caucus leader, Nicole Graham met with city officials this morning, 17 August, to discuss a way forward.
Graham highlighted issues at the Gardens in the hopes that something could be done urgently to clean up this space, which should be a tourist attraction.
“The Garden is in a shocking condition – it is filthy, beams and columns are structurally unsound, there are dead pigeons in the ponds and lying on the ground and the ponds are a complete mess,” she said.

At the meeting, the fact that there was no infrastructure and landscaping contract in place to deal with this at the moment was brought to light, and maintenance fell on the Parks Department’s shoulders.
