The unsuspecting Veki opened the case and found a snake curled up inside.

He took it back to the police station where his commander called Sgt Stephen Clark, who was working in the control room, to assist with the snake.

Speaking about the incident on social media, Clark said: “I identified the snake as an exotic Ball Python, and a photo to Nick Evans confirmed this. She was very well behaved and had a sleep in my cap until she was collected by Nick Liebenberg from Ezemvelo Wildlife.”

He said Liebenberg will look after the reptile, affectionately named Vezi, until he can determine if she is someone’s stolen property.
