Woolworths said it had no influence in removal of informal traders

“These removals were undertaken by the local municipality on their own accord. We can confirm that Woolworths has had no influence or involvement in the said municipal action, “she said.

WIRE artists workers in Bulwer Road are hoping to get their trading license soon, so that they can get back to making a living for themselves and their families again.

In a statement to Berea Mail, Woolworths head office said Woolworths had nothing to to with banning and the removal of wire artists traders  who operating outside their store.

Silindile Gumede, Corporate Communications manager at Woolworths responded to the matter and agreed that they are aware of what happened.

A wire artist, Ezra Sekenhamo, who works with Victor Mpofu before being banned.

“We were made aware of the removal of the informal traders operating outside our Bulwer Road store in Durban, last week. This incident occurred subsequent to the regulatory inspections conducted by the local authorities in the Glenwood area a few months prior to the incident. These removals were undertaken by the local municipality on their own accord.  We can confirm that Woolworths has had no influence or involvement in the said municipal action, “she said.

This is followed by the circulation in the social media, in the “Everything Glenwood “ group on Facebook post where by residents were expressing their concerns about the ban of two wire artists who has been operating in the corner of Bulwer Rd since 2008 making a living for themselves.

Residents took to social media to express outrage after police on Friday confiscated the stock and fined the artists.

According to the artists the reason the police told them is that they were told by the management and they heard that they are food beggars outside the premises while they say they never bothered anyone and begged anyone food, they just do their work with a smile.
