Renowned butterfly expert joins Plant Fair 2026

Steve Woodhall will be on hand both days to chat about all things flutter-related and showcase his butterfly book.

Distinguished lepidopterist and photographer Steve Woodhall will join the 2026 Plant Fair at the Durban Botanic Gardens on September 5-6.

“Woodhall is one of South Africa’s leading butterfly experts, and he’ll be on hand both days to chat all things flutter-related. All questions about butterflies, their host plants, and how to turn a garden into a haven for them.

“He’ll also be showcasing his children’s book, My First Book of Southern African Caterpillars, Butterflies and Moths (Struik Nature), an introduction for young nature-lovers, featuring 56 species and illustrated by Jennifer Schaum. Described as a must-have for parents raising budding entomologists,” said Jane Troughton, Botanical Society of SA (BotSoc) spokesperson.

Hosted by the BotSoc, KZN Coastal Branch, the event is the longest-running plant fair.

Speakers will include Linday Gray on Basic Principles of Garden Design; Dr Elsa Pooley and Jane Troughton of Well-Loved Garden: Pruning, Propagating, and Renewal; Jenny Dean on Creating A Garden for Wildlife; and Muhammad Adamjee on Life After Fire – The Story Behind SA’s Gold Win at the Chelsea Flower Show 2026.

Entry to the Plant Fair is free, and it runs from 09:00 – 16:00.
