Durban International Marathon set to break boundaries in 2024

Next year’s marathon will also double as the South African Marathon Championships.

THE fourth edition of the Durban International Marathon is scheduled to take place on April 28, 2024.

The marathon, which has developed into one the premier events on the South African running calendar, starts in Prospecton and finishes at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The 42km race is open to all runners and will also be the setting for the South African Marathon Championships.

The event which also boasts a 10km race is expected to attract 10 000 runners.

“The 2024 race is shaping up to be an exciting event for both professional and amateur athletes. Ultimately for us, our goal is to grow the sport of athletics and to be able to host a race which caters for runners across the spectrum,” race and local organizing committee chairman Steve Mkasi said.

On the eve of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, next year’s Durban International Marathon carries precious World Athletics ranking points across the three events.

“We are looking forward to a stellar field next year with lots on the line athletes. The fast route and cool weather in the city around April will no doubt contribute to some competitive times,” Mkasi said.

The prize money has also been bumped up with the winners in the men’s and women’s races walking away with R75 000 each.

Entries for next year’s event are open and athletes can enter online via www.webtickets.co.za or at the nearest Pick ‘n Pay Supermarket.
