Glenwood High School teacher scoops lead educator award

Kalaivanan Chinniah’s dedication as an educator has significantly enhanced the performance of the Grade 12 class of 2023.

A GLENWOOD High School teacher has been recognised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education for his outstanding role as the lead educator in the uMlazi District. Kalaivanan Chinniah has been an educator for 33 years and says the profession fills him with so much satisfaction, and he gets to live his childhood dream of being like his father who was also an educator.

“Growing up, I loved watching my father go to work and always said to myself that I want to be just as dedicated as him one day and excel in my job. To be able to live that dream is just amazing,” says Chinniah.

Having joined Glenwood in 1999, he pioneered the Mathematical Literacy Department in 2008, achieving an incredible 100% pass rate since its inception. Chinniah’s dedication and commitment as an educator have significantly enhanced the performance of the Grade 12 class of 2023, and with this, he says he is grateful to be recognised by the department for his calling.

“I felt an immense sense of satisfaction knowing that I am being acknowledged for the hard work and dedication that I have put in for years, for the benefit of my learners. My interaction with the learners, imparting my knowledge and wisdom to them and knowing that I am making a difference, will always be the best part of my job,” said Chinniah.

Chinniah says that everyone who wishes to become an educator should do it out of love and answering a personal calling as the profession, although greatly satisfying, is not without its hurdles.
