The accident occurred at the corner of Joe Slovo Street (Field Street) and Monty Naicker Road (Pine Street) just before 02:00 on Saturday morning (May 11).

“Paramedics arrived on scene to find carnage as a light motor vehicle and a heavy motor vehicle had collided in the junction before the heavy motor vehicle overturned, coming to rest on its side. Paramedics quickly triaged the scene and found that the light motor vehicle driver, a male believed to be in his 30s, had sustained major injuries and was still entrapped in his vehicle.
“There was nothing Paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene. The Durban Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to free him. Two occupants from the truck had sustained moderate injuries, and they were stabilised on the scene by ALS Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required,” he said.
Jamieson added that, at this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown, however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.
