Thirteen municipal workers arrested

Merely hours after the City issued a statement saying they will not tolerate unlawful actions as a result of the strike, 13 suspects have been arrested in Springfield Park.

THIRTEEN municipal workers have been arrested at municipal offices in Springfield Park.

According to the South African Police Services (SAPS), the suspects are aged between 36 and 59 years and were arrested for contravention of a court order, damage to infrastructure and malicious damage to property.

The arrest comes after a group of municipal employees had gathered at the municipal offices on Electron Road amidst a strike by eThekwini Municipality workers which erupted on Tuesday (February 27).

In a statement, police said, “They allegedly put sand and burnt trees. They were forcing other employees out of the offices and damaged the gate.”

SAPS says the suspects will appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (March 6).
