Counterfeit goods worth R37m, cash worth R200K confiscated during Durban raid
Five men were nabbed by police yesterday after being found with more than R37-million worth of counterfeit goods. Hundreds of high-end clothing labels as well as cash were found and seized by police.
SAPS CONFISCATED counterfeit high-end clothing items worth over R15 million during an operation that was conducted in the Durban CBD on Thursday morning.
The operation continued, and the total amount of counterfeit goods recovered was R37 million. A cash amount of R200 000 was also found and seized.
According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, “A team that deals with contraband and counterfeit and illicit goods gathered intelligence that there were shops on Dr Prixley kaSeme Street in the Point area of Durban that were selling counterfeit goods. Police obtained search warrants for several shops which were raided on Thursday, leading to the recovery and seizure of the counterfeit clothing items, watches and other big-brand items.
“At least four suspects have already been arrested in the operation which is still ongoing. All suspects are foreign nationals, and their status in the country has yet to be confirmed. Once processed, the suspects will be taken to court.”
Five suspects were arrested and will appear in court.
