Suzan celebrates her 100th birthday ‘her way’

Suzan Daniels feels years younger after celebrating her milestone birthday surrounded by her loving friends and family. The centenarian has lived through many experiences in the country and world.

CENTENARIAN Suzan Daniels recently celebrated her milestone birthday surrounded by her friends and family at the Garden Grove Retirement Complex in Musgrave, making the day extra special for her.

“The 100-year-old planned her birthday herself and did exactly what she wanted to do,” said Meg Fraser-Cormac of the Garden Grove Retirement Centre. “She spent her day getting many wishes from so many people. She enjoyed brunch with her family who came out from Mauritius and England. Then at 14:00, she had a special party with her close friends and family,” added Fraser-Cormac.

Suzan was born in Mauritius in 1924 and married the love of her life, Noel, in 1965. Following their beautiful wedding, Noel and Suzan moved to South Africa where he opened a chemist in Pietermaritzburg. Noel retired in 1986, and the couple moved to Durban where they made Garden Grove Retirement Complex their home in the year 2000. Sadly, eight years later, Noel passed away in 2008.

When asked what her earliest memory was, Suzan said, “My mom died when I was very young, and I was brought up by my aunt, but my earliest memory is getting a little stool and taking it to my mom’s bedside and holding her hand.”

She said the key to living a long and healthy life is eating well. “I am very happy at Garden Grove. I do not accept any nonsense from anyone. I am well looked after and cared for, and it feels like everyone here is my family,” said Suzan.

Having been alive for 100 years, Suzan lived through the Second World War, the evolution of technology, the fall of the apartheid era and the birth of a democratic South Africa. The centenarian said she had no option but ‘to go along with all the changes; otherwise, I would have been left behind’.

“Garden Grove residents and staff wish Suzan a very happy 100th birthday, and she is loved by all,” said Fraser-Cormac.
