Maris Stella principal leaves lasting legacy
After 28 years of dedicated service, Maris Stella School principal, Joan Schmidt, is retiring from the profession and leaving behind a lasting legacy.
EMOTIONS ran high at Maris Stella School on Friday, November 29, as learners and staff bid a heartfelt farewell to their principal, Joan Schmidt, with a special assembly that also marked the end of the academic year.
After 28 years of dedicated service at the school, including a decade as principal, Schmidt is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration, kindness, and unwavering commitment to education. Schmidt joined Maris Stella in 1997 as a mathematics teacher, quickly becoming a beloved figure among staff and learners alike. During the school’s final assembly, an event brimming with poignant speeches, soulful choir performances, and touching tributes, Schmidt was celebrated for her remarkable journey and immeasurable contributions to the 125-year-old institution.
An educator at the school thanked Schmidt for her kindness and praised her unique leadership style, saying, “Mrs Schmidt believes in fairness and second chances. If you’ve ever been to her office, you know she always lets you tell your side of the story. Even when you were in the wrong, she would address it, then say, ‘It’s finished now. You can start fresh.’ Her belief in new beginnings is something we’ll all carry with us.”

Schmidt assumed the role of principal in 2014, guiding the school to new heights with her hands-on approach, empathetic leadership, and visionary mindset. The administrative staff noted in their tribute: “You walked alongside us, leading with wisdom, listening, encouraging, and believing in every step. No task was too small, no vision too ambitious. Your legacy will endure, and thanks to you, our future shines bright.”
Schmidt began her teaching career in 1981, and joined Maris Stella in 1997, soon becoming a cornerstone of the school’s fabric. Reflecting on her journey, Schmidt said, “Being at Maris Stella has been my life, my home away from home. Every morning, driving into the school, I’d feel an incredible sense of purpose. It’s been a privilege to connect with the girls and staff, to support their achievements, and to help shape brighter futures.”
As she steps into retirement, Schmidt left her learners with words of wisdom: “In tough times, fall back on the Maris Stella values. When you are out in the world, beyond the boundaries of school rules, it’s easy to lose yourself in the crowd. But remember the values instilled in you here – look up, trust, and stay grounded in what you have learnt.”
Although Schmidt is leaving the classroom behind, her influence will continue to resonate within the Maris Stella community. She plans to spend her retirement enjoying time with her husband of 44 years, their three children, and five grandchildren while remaining connected to the profession she loves.
