Killer Metro cop sentenced to 20 years imprisonment

Sizwe Clinton Ngema, a Metro Police officer who killed his pregnant girlfriend and recorded her last breaths, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

ETHEKWINI Metro Police officer Sizwe Clinton Ngema, who recorded the last moments of his pregnant girlfriend’s life after stabbing her several times in March 2024, has been found guilty of murder and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment at the Durban High Court.

Ngema, 28, appeared in court on Thursday where he entered a guilty plea, admitting to killing Biancha Yolanda Khuzwayo, 23, who also worked for eThekwini Metro Police. In his plea and as read out by his lawyer, Advocate Simphiwe Mlotshwa, Ngema told the court of the events that led to the March 30 incident and the murder of his girlfriend. He said their relationship had become acrimonious and that there were frequent fights and abuse of Khuzwayo at his hands.

Leading up to the murder of Khuzwayo, Ngema said, “In January 2024, the deceased became pregnant and that was the happiest moment of my life. However, the deceased began having doubts and contemplated terminating the pregnancy.” Ngema found out that Khuzwayo wanted to terminate the pregnancy, after he read a WhatsApp message that she had sent to a friend. On March 30, Ngema and Khuzwayo hosted a party at their flat near the Victoria Embankment where alcohol and drugs were consumed.

Angered by the messages that he had seen and fuelled by drugs and alcohol, Ngema confronted Khuzwayo. “During the confrontation, the deceased told him that he was not the father of the child. Enraged, the accused repeatedly stabbed the deceased,” read the plea. He stabbed her twice on the left side of her face, three times on the left side of her neck, three more stab wounds to the neck and shoulder, and several more on her upper arm and breast.

Upon killing his pregnant girlfriend, Ngema took Khuzwayo’s cellphone and fled via the M4 South where he eventually crashed his vehicle. Having pleaded guilty to murder, Ngema also accepted a charge of theft and reckless driving. On top of the 20 years for murder, he was further sentenced to 12 months for theft and another 12 months for reckless driving. The sentences will run concurrently.
