Penzance celebrates 105 years of excellence

The school has planned several more celebrations to mark the occasion of their 105 years of academic excellence.

PENZANCE Primary School was abuzz with excitement on Monday, February 17, as they celebrated 105 years of academic excellence and existence within the Berea community.

The school, located on Bartle Road in Glenwood, officially opened their gates and classroom doors to learners on 16 February, 1920. The departmental head of Penzance Primary School, John Legemaate, said that 53 children were enrolled that day, marking a great start to the school’s impeccable legacy in education. “The principal at that time was Mr Day, and there were four teachers who were there to greet the 53 learners,” said Legemaate.

He said Penzance has come so far since then, with scores of learners passing through their classroom doors and being guided into excellent futures and careers. The growth in the number of learners over the years also meant an increase in the number of staff and employment opportunities.
“A 105 years later, there are over a hundred members of staff with Mr Havemann as principal. There are 58 teachers, many interns that assist our teaching staff, and a facilities support team,” added Legemaate.

To mark the special occasion, the school celebrated by outlining the number 105 on the field with learners from Grade 00 to Grade Seven. They were rewarded with a sweet and cooling ice cream treat. Legemaate said more events have been planned by the school to celebrate the history and legacy of Penzance, as they were unable to go all out in 2020 for their 100th anniversary.
