City temporarily uplifts water curtailment
The city of eThekwini will soon lift water curtailment after its executive and national government reached an agreement. Water curtailment was implemented in October 2024 in an effort to alleviate water shortages in the city.
FOLLOWING three months of water curtailment in the eThekwini municipality, the Exco presented its Water Turnaround Strategy Business Plan to the highest level of national government and expressed that it is ready to tackle water challenges head-on.
“I must mention that we had a fruitful meeting with the Minister (Pammy Majodina) and her team to the extent that she agreed to temporarily uplift water curtailment measures which the Department of Water and Sanitation and Umngeni Uthukela Water Board has been implementing since October last year. This interim reprieve will be in place until April this year. This will allow us to implement water balancing measures without customers feeling a huge strain, said eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba.

He added, “We are confident that through the following actions, we will be able to achieve our target by conducting monthly meter readings, proactive maintenance of water meters by ensuring that we replace meters that are above 15 years, identify unmetered consumers and install meters, improve meter reading contract management, identify illegal water connections and disconnect them immediately, ensuring that 95% of reported water leaks are responded to within 24 hours and monitoring of transfer points where water buyback by uMngeni uThukela Water takes place so that they pay for every single cent due to us.”
