Osborn ripping waves of fortitude

Osborn Lindani Gumede is making waves in the para-surfing community.

WITH the 2025 South African National Para Surfing Championships just around the corner, one young man is determined to give it his all and carve his name on the plaque of all greats before him.

At just 25 years old, Osborn Lindani Gumede is making waves in the para-surfing community. His journey into the sport began through Made for More, a programme designed to support athletes with disabilities. For Gumede, surfing is more than just a sport — it’s an opportunity to be part of a team, push his limits, and inspire others. Gumede’s journey has not been easy. At the age of 12, he lost his leg due to cancer, a life-changing experience that challenged him in many ways. But he never gave up.

“From that moment, I had to learn to live differently, but being part of Made for More is like being at home. We are surrounded by people who love and support us, just like our coach and volunteers who always empower us,” shared Gumede. Unlike other sports he tried, surfing gives him a unique sense of freedom and confidence. “There’s something special about being on the waves — it’s peaceful but also exciting. It challenges me in ways I never expected.”

His highlights so far include mastering new surfing techniques, building friendships within the community, and gaining confidence in his abilities. “I want to grow in the sport, compete, and maybe even inspire others to take up surfing, no matter their challenges.”

Balancing personal goals with surfing, Gumede remains focused on self-improvement. He acknowledges that setbacks are part of any athlete’s journey. “Failure is just another step toward success. I learn from every mistake and come back stronger.”

As he looks ahead, he dreams of winning in competitions and making a name for himself. “I wish to win, but more than that, I wish everyone competing in the SA Championship the best.”

For those who may be hesitant to try new things, Gumede has one message: “Never let fear stop you. Whether in sports or life, always believe in yourself and take that first step.”

Made For More is proud to host the ninth edition of the South African National Para Surfing Championships on the Durban beachfront from April 12-13.
