Durban set to launch 11th International Day of Yoga

Thousands of yoga enthusiasts are expected to be part of the 11th United Nations International Day of Yoga launch at North Beach on Saturday, April 12, from 13:00 to 16:00, hosted by Sivananda World Peace Foundation.

A SEA of tranquility will wash over Durban’s North Beach on Saturday, April 12, when yoga enthusiasts come together for the official launch of the 11th United Nations International Day of Yoga, from 13:00 to 16:00, in the vicinity of the Suncoast complex.

The event will set the stage for the main celebration on Saturday, June 21, when thousands of yoga enthusiasts and tourists will unite to honour the ancient practice at Durban’s Amphitheatre. The event organisers, Sivananda World Peace Foundation, said the international celebrations cement Durban’s role in fostering social cohesion and tourism.

Over the past decade, strong backing from provincial and local governments, the national Department of Health, and the eThekwini Municipality has helped to establish this event as a major cultural and wellness initiative. Ishwar Ramlutchman, also known as Prince Mabheka Zulu of the Zulu Royal Household and president of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, said, “Durban’s vibrant multicultural atmosphere, its cacophony of sound and colour from its bustling markets to golden beaches, provides a unique setting for this celebration. The serenity of yoga blends seamlessly with our diverse cultures, symbolising unity and wellness.”

In the past, the event has attracted over 3 000 participants with the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi being among the attendees. Ramlutchman said the 2025 edition of International Day of Yoga aims to surpass last year’s attendance record. “We are reaching out to all communities to embrace yoga as a universal quest for balance and wellness. It reminds us of our interconnectedness, even in moments of personal mindfulness,” said Ramlutchman.

Yoga has also gained popularity among schoolchildren as a means of promoting health, wellness, and mental fitness. Under the “Yoga for Humanity” initiative, the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, in partnership with the provincial administration, continues to be the driving force of yoga education in schools.
