Taxi violence suspected in fatal Point shooting
Petrol station employee injured in the crossfire during an assassination attempt in Point on Friday. Police are yet to rule out a taxi feud as the motive behind the hit.
POLICE investigating the fatal shooting at a petrol station in the Point Road area, on Friday, are yet to rule out taxi violence as the motive behind the attack that also landed two other people in hospital, including a woman who was working inside the shop.
According to Kyle van Reenen from Ensure Security, they were alerted to the shooting incident at around 16:00 on Good Friday and dispatched their Urban Regeneration Tactical Response Teams to the scene where the SAPS were in attendance.
He said, “It was ascertained that three armed men approached a taxi driver, firing shots in an attempt to kill him. The man returned fire in defence of his life, fatally wounding one of the suspects.”

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said, “Reports indicate that at least two men were seated outside a fuel station shop when a vehicle arrived and its occupants started shooting at them. The two men reportedly returned fire. During the shooting, the passenger in the vehicle was shot and certified dead at the scene.
“One man sustained gunshot injuries and a woman who was working inside the shop was also caught with a bullet and both of them were rushed to hospital. Two AK47 assault rifles were found at the scene, whereas a handgun was seized from the man who was hospitalised.”
He confirmed that cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by police in Point. “The motive of the shooting is yet to be confirmed, however taxi-related feud cannot be ruled out,” added Netshiunda.
