Sherwood Primary teacher and learner conquer the Dolphin Mile

Sherwood Primary School teacher and seasoned open water swimmer, Shalani Naidu, recently led by example as she took on her first Dolphin Mile Swim on Sunday alongside Grade 7 learner, Karusha Gounder. The duo made it across the finish line in 22 minutes and 17 minutes, respectively, raising the school flag high.

THE Sherwood Primary School community is beaming with pride following the incredible success of educator Shalani Naidu and Grade 7 learner, Karusha Gounder, at the iconic Dolphin Mile Swim in Durban over the weekend.

The 800m open water event, held during the early hours of Sunday morning, was a first for Naidu, who completed the swim in 22 minutes, and the second for Gounder, who crossed the finish line in 17 minutes. The proud open water swimmers were beaming with pride and smiles at their achievement.

“This was more than just a race,” said Naidu. “It was a shared moment of courage, growth, and pride — seeing my learner beside me in the water was incredibly special.”

Sunday’s swim, however, was not Naidu’s first at battling through choppy ocean waters, having completed over 10 Midmar Mile challenges. Gounder has already taken part in two Midmar Mile events, two Dolphin Mile swims, and a Capital K race.

Despite the choppy conditions and occasional swells, both Gounder and Naidu described the swim as “refreshing, thrilling, and filled with laughter”.

The duo said the conditions tested their stamina, but also offered stunning views of the Durban coastline and warm ocean temperatures perfect for the time of year. The Dolphin Mile is part of a long-standing open water swim series known for its emphasis on endurance, ocean awareness, and community. Founded to promote ocean swimming and healthy lifestyles, the event attracts swimmers of all ages and experience levels from across the country.
