A celebration of literacy, creativity, and ambition is coming to KZN. Don’t miss the wordplay, the excitement, and the opportunity of a lifetime for your child or learner to be part of the KZN Open Spelling Bee at Stadio Musgrave on August 23. The event which kicks off at 13:00 will be filled with spelling, inspiration, and life-changing possibilities.
HYPE and excitement is building ahead of the much-anticipated return of the KZN Open Spelling Bee competition on August 23.
The event, which promises to be an inspiring celebration of literacy, excellence, and aspiration, will take place at the Stadio School of Education in Musgrave. The KZN Open Spelling Bee is part of a global initiative that offers young learners a platform to showcase their talent, build confidence, and unlock opportunities at both national and international levels.
The competition is hosted by A Better Africa Foundation in collaboration with local education stakeholders. Participants will compete for trophies and prizes, and have the chance to qualify for national and continental contests.
Londy Mkambapi, the proud mother of 2023 KZN Spelling Bee Champion Salusiwe Mkambapi, knows firsthand the transformative impact of this competition. “The spelling bee has been an incredible journey for our family,” said Mkambapi as she encouraged schools and parents to enter the competition.

She said, “When Salusiwe won the KZN Championship in 2023, it led us to the African Spelling Bee in Uganda. It was a life-changing experience — for her and for me as a parent. I encourage every mother and father to give their children this chance.”
The KZN Open Spelling Bee isn’t just about spelling; it’s about opening doors and empowering young minds. Alongside inspiring guest speakers and vibrant competition rounds, learners will gain invaluable exposure and life skills that extend beyond the stage.
The CEO of the African Spelling Bee, Roger Dickinson, has also encouraged the enrolment of learners for Africa’s largest spelling bee competition which has a junior (10 to 13 years old) and senior (14 to 16 years old) categories. Regional winners will go on to represent the province at the South African Spelling Bee Finals at Sun City this October.
Registration is open and can be done by visiting www.africanspellingbee.com/southafrica or send a WhatsApp to 079 196 7054 for entry guidelines and more information. “Entries will close a week before the competition or when the cap of 150 is reached,” said Dickinson.
