Life Entabeni Hospital launches groundbreaking robotic surgical system

In a bid to improve and advance surgeries, Life Entabeni Hospital has acquired and installed the Da Vinci X Robotic System. This, according to practitioners, is a groundbreaking lifesaving initiative.

LIFE Entabeni Hospital has acquired the Da Vinci X Robotic System and installed it in their theatre, marking a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery and healthcare innovation in the region.

“The Da Vinci system represents a leap forward in surgical precision, patient safety and post-operative recovery. With this technology, Life Entabeni Hospital becomes one of the facilities in the region equipped to offer robotic-assisted surgeries, reaffirming our role as a leader in advanced healthcare delivery. We are never too old to try new technology,” said the hospital’s CEO, Trish Aviv.

Thus far, a total of 13 installations have been done country-wide, with only one in KZN.

Urologist Dr Michael Nicholls highlighted how the robotic system has advanced and improved his surgeries. “Patients’ feedback about the Da Vinci system has been positive, as they experienced minimal pain, returning home quicker than expected, no leaks and very slight change in erectile function.”
He added, “When it comes to kidney surgeries, the system yields partial nephrectomy, removes only the cancer, preserves renal tissue, minimal ischaemic time, minimal invasive surgery with short hospital stay.”

The Da Vinci system specialises in different soft tissue surgeries, including urologic, general surgery/hernia, colorectal, thoracic, gynaecologic and bariatric.
Nanette Meyer of Medhold, distributors of the Da Vinci Robots in the country, shared that over 115 robotic surgeons have been trained so far, and 14 300 Da Vinci Robotic procedures have been done since installation, with 8550 since 2021.
