WATCH: ‘Hands off Mkhwanazi’ march underway in Durban
Supporters of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi are out in full force this morning, marching from Curries Fountain to Hoy Park where they will deliver a memorandum calling for his protection after he blew the lid on deep-rooted corruption within the SAPS.
SCORES of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi supporters are currently marching from Curries Fountain to Hoy Park where they will hand over a memorandum of demands to SAPS National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, calling for the renewal of the KZN Commissioner’s contract and his protection following the damning allegations that he made against the Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu.
Vincent Mdunge, one of the march organisers and a member of the civil organisation uMnotho waBansundu, said that they have no faith in the commission of enquiry that was set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate the allegation of corruption within the police force. “It is not going to serve the interest of the Republic,” said Mdunge, who was surrounded by members of uMkhonto weSizwe and March and March. The organisations have thrown their weight behind the march and their support for Mkhwanazi.

Mdunge, a former KZN police spokesperson, was also once under scrutiny when he found himself on the wrong side of the law. In 2015, he was sentenced to five years in prison for faking his matric certificate and allegedly defrauding SAPS of over R3.5m worth of salaries. He resurfaced in 2024 as the provincial spokesperson for the MK Party.

Mdunge said that the aim of the march was very clear. “We have taken a resolution as civic society that we will stand with Mkhwanazi, because he is the last line of defence for the people of KwaZulu-Natal and the rest of South Africa.”

His words were echoed by Teresa Nortje of March and March who said, “Hands off Mkhwanazi. He should be the Minister of police because of his integrity and dedication to protecting South Africans. We cannot stand back as citizens and watch what is happening to this man.”
She called on Ramaphosa to give Mchunu his marching orders. “If any hands or harm come to Mkhwanazi, it will not be a good thing because we are backing him and standing firm beside him.”
