67 Blankets warms hearts on Nelson Mandela Day
In honour of upholding the legacy of Nelson Mandela and his spirit of generosity, the Durban team from 67 Blankets have been making special deliveries throughout the province. Boxes full of blankets, beanies and scarves have been delivered to NGOs and to those in need.
A SPECIAL delivery from the Durban team of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day was received with love and joy by the little ones of William Clarke Gardens / Othandweni Children’s Home who found themselves wrapped in warmth and comfort.
The team delivered 52 handmade blankets to children at the home in Sherwood. Sue Eslick, 67 Blankets’ ambassador, said that each blanket was knitted or crocheted by dedicated volunteers with love, hope, and humanity. “This outreach forms part of the worldwide movement inspired by the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela,” said Eslick.

She said that the delivery brought smiles, comfort, and joy to the children who were reminded that they are seen, valued, and cared for. Eslick said, “The handover event was a meaningful moment for everyone involved, and it reinforced the power of simple gestures to make a big impact.”
Since 2013, 67 Blankets and their volunteers have been hard at work stitching the fabric that would eventually become one of the biggest campaigns to honour the late statesman, Nelson Mandela, on his birthday, July 18. Just like the organisation, he served the people and encouraged acts of kindness.

Eslick said that this blanket delivery is one of many acts of service taking place across SA to keep Madiba’s spirit alive. “In Durban, we are proud to be part of this initiative, which brings communities together through creativity and kindness. The blankets given to the children’s home reflect the heart of this project — each one is a labour of love, made by volunteers who give their time and skill to uplift others. Through every thread and every colour, we aim to share the message: you are loved, and you are not alone,” added Eslick.

The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day encourages South Africans to contribute 67 minutes or more of their time by knitting or crocheting blankets and scarves, which are then distributed to people in need. As part of the organisation’s Mandela Day activities, scarves were hung in public spaces throughout the country, for anyone who may need one on Friday, July 18.
The Durban team made a donation and sizeable delivery of beanies and scarves to the Denis Hurley Centre this morning which was received with love by Dr Raymond Perrier. “Every scarf was made with love,” said Eslick.
