Albert Dlomo sinkhole set for repairs

Work to repair the sinkhole that has reduced a section of Albert Dlomo Road in Glenwood to one lane is expected to get underway in August following the completion of the City’s procurement process.

AFTER months of complaining and reporting their concerns, residents and motorists will soon be able travel safely along Albert Dlomo Road in Glenwood following confirmation by the City that repairs to a massive sinkhole in the area will soon get underway.

Since March, a portion of Albert Dlomo Road was reduced to a narrow single lane as the road continued to collapse. A resident who witnessed the start of the collapse said it began with a small dip on the road. Sipho Dlamini said nobody knew what was happening until the hole appeared on the road in March.

“We used to see the cars bumping something but we did not know what it was. Then, one day a hole appeared in the middle of the road.”

He said private security that patrols the area were called to help secure the road. “They immediately came and put caution tape around the sinkhole; it was smaller then. Despite this, a car had to be lifted out of the hole after a driver reversed too far from a nearby garage, landing the back tyre in the hole. The car had to be lifted out; we are grateful that there have been no injuries as a result of this sinkhole,” said Dlamini.

Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher said she was alerted to the incident and collapse of the road. “I requested for ETA / Signage and Traffic Control to cordon off the road,” said Kristopher. “It does, however, look like a major job. If you look further down Albert Dlomo there are major sinkholes developing near Esther Roberts. It has been put out for tender and work will commence in August 2025. This will be communicated closer to the repair dates.”

This was confirmed by eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana: “The project is currently in the procurement phase. The City anticipates that a contractor will be on site by the end of the month (July).” To report roads that are of concern, email: cservices@durban.gov.za and cc: cllr.frankay@gmail.com.
