Durban Metro steps up patrols with renewed speed trap blitz
The metro police say their teams will be strategically deployed to monitor and deter reckless driving, ensuring safer roads for all.
ON Thursday, July 31, the Durban Metro Police Services launched its first Speed Timing Operation in a decade to monitor speeding vehicles on roads.
In a social media post, the department said this was the first in over 10 years and marked its “renewed commitment to road safety, traffic law enforcement, and smart policing”.

“Our teams will be strategically deployed to monitor and deter reckless driving, ensuring safer roads for all. Let this be a warning to speedsters, we are watching, we are ready, and we are enforcing,” reads the social media post.
Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Victor Zungu said the operations had not been conducted in 10 years because the department did not have the necessary equipment, which is outsourced, and because the previous contractor had “challenges”.
“But now we are back in action,” said Zungu.
He added that the metro police will focus on roads where there appears to be an increase in the number of accidents where speed was a contributing factor.
