KZN police bolstered with mobile stations

Four state-of-the-art mobile police stations have been added to the province's fleet, boosting KZN's crimefighting efforts. At a cost of R1.7m each, the stations will service the areas of Bulwer, Inanda, Mbonambi and KwaMakhutha.

THE crimefighting efforts of KwaZulu-Natal police have been bolstered with the handover of four state-of-the-art mobile police stations by Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli under the Department of Community Safety and Liaison.

Valued at over R1.7m each, the stations will service the areas of Bulwer, Inanda, Mbonambi and KwaMakhutha. Ntuli said the stations are fully equipped with advanced communications technology, holding facilities, and other critical resources necessary for responsive, community-based policing.

“Our goal is clear: to take policing to where it is most needed,” said Ntuli. “These mobile stations will increase visibility, reduce response times, and most importantly, build public confidence in our law enforcement agencies. They will be deployed strategically to identified hotspots, areas that have experienced unacceptably high levels of crime, including robbery, hijackings, rape, and murder.”

This intervention also complements the national SAPS recruitment drive, which has resulted in the training of 5500 new police trainees for the 2025 financial year. Last year, the department handed over 36 vehicles to the SAPS to help close the gap on a shortage of resources.
“At the heart of these efforts is the urgent need to strengthen the operational capacity of the SAPS, especially in areas where our communities remain vulnerable to violent crime and under-resourced policing,” said Ntuli.

The mobile stations were welcomed by deputy provincial commissioner, Major General Phumelele Makhoba. She said the mobile units will be of help in areas where communities are far from the local police stations. “The moment that the paperwork to have the mobile police on the road is complete, they will be put to work,” said Makhoba. “Hopefully we have them located in the specified area by the end of the week.”
