SASSA to introduce biometric enrolment for new applicants

September will not only usher in a new season, but a new digital era in the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is on the horizon, with the introduction of the mandatory Beneficiary Biometric Enrolment in all its offices from 01 September

ALL the clients of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) would have to undergo a soon-to-be-introduced biometric enrolment in a bid to reduce fraud and inaccuracies. This affects new applications, reviews, and changes in personal details.

SASSA CEO Themba Matlou said, “The new era is expected to revolutionise the administration of social grants, and the biometric enrolment is set to be a precursor to detect and nip in the bud any potentially fraudulent activities in SASSA’s grant system.”

He added that this follows the resolution of a myriad issues over marathon engagements with organised labour, paving the way for a new age for SASSA in its resolve to administer a tight and credible grant system.

Matlou expressed a sigh of relief at the conclusion of discussions with organised labour. The biometric enrolment was supposed to start a few months ago, but SASSA reportedly hit a snag, and some of the issues “had since been ironed out”.

Black Sash has expressed displeasure with this move, citing that the elderly and the sick would be affected badly, as the process might prove strenuous for them.
