Is pork good for you? MUT lecturer explains
The lecturer says pork is often overlooked as a healthy protein source, but it packs a nutritional punch.
THE health benefits of pork are understated, and we asked Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) lecturer Dr Ndumiso Ncobela to set the record straight.
In June 2025, Dr Ncobela from the Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences at MUT received research funding from the SA Pork Producers Organisation (SAPPO) to conduct a research project aimed at promoting pork consumption in communities across KZN. Ncobela has assembled a team of researchers from MUT’s neighbouring institutions to carry out the project, which focuses on improving consumer awareness, and shaping preferences through targeted, community-based interventions. This will highlight the nutritional value, culinary versatility, and affordability of pork, with the aim of encouraging greater uptake and demand.

The lecturer believes that pork is more than just a versatile and flavourful addition to meals. Ncobela says pork is often overlooked as a healthy protein source, but it packs a nutritional punch. “Pork is also a source of important nutrients that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Pork offers incredible versatility for home cooks while providing essential nutrients like protein, vitamins, and minerals that support overall health,” he says.
For people who want to improve their heart health, Dr Ncobela recommends pork consumption. He highlighted that pork is particularly rich in B vitamins, including B6 and B12, which help with energy production, brain function, and red blood cell formation.
The lecturer says: “People who experience fatigue or low energy can benefit from the high levels of B vitamins in pork, which help the body convert food into usable energy. Additionally, pork is a great source of iron, which is essential for oxygen transport in the blood, reducing the risk of anaemia and improving overall vitality.”
Another major health benefit of pork is its high zinc content. Dr Ncobela reveals that zinc is crucial for immune function, helping the body fight off infections and heal wounds more efficiently. He adds that pork is a valuable addition to a balanced diet.
