DHS mourns passing of beloved learner, Lemar Dunn

Durban High School is heartbroken over the passing of Grade 12 head boy Lemar Dunn. A gifted musician, actor, and leader, Lemar left a legacy of kindness and character.

DURBAN High School is mourning the loss of Grade 12 learner Lemar Dunn, who died on September 10.

Lemar joined DHS in Grade Eight from Hamptons Primary School, and was described by the school management “as a true DHS gentleman and a young man of character”. In a tribute shared on the school’s social media platforms, DHS said, “From the beginning, he immersed himself in the life of the school, embracing opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

“Teachers and peers alike recall his quiet sense of purpose, and his kind, caring heart and his positive nature. With a warm smile and an easy sense of humour, he brought light to those around him and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His presence at DHS was valued, and his loss leaves a deep void in our community.”

Dunn was a gifted musician who played the trumpet and was an active member of the jazz band, brass band, and DHS Choir. He was also a talented performer in dramatic arts, where his creativity and insight shone through.

“Lemar will be remembered as a true DHS gentleman – a young man of character, well-mannered, respectful, and always a pleasure to be around. Our thoughts and prayers are with his mom Alicia, dad Leon, brother Landon, and all who loved him. May they find comfort in the knowledge that Lemar’s life touched so many and that his memory will remain a part of the DHS family forever. Deo Fretus,” said the school.

Meanwhile condolences have been pouring in. St Henry’s Marist College said, “The St Henry’s Marist community extends our deepest condolences to the Dunn family. We hold Lemar’s family and friends, and the entire DHS community in our prayers at this difficult time.”

Christie Ginja Marie said, “Such a devastating loss. My deepest sympathy to the Dunn family, Lemar’s friends and teachers, and the DHS community. He will be sorely missed.”

And Natascha Rautenbach said, “I had the privilege of teaching Lamar and Landon at Hamptons Primary School and tutoring them privately in Afrikaans. He was wise beyond his years, had a sharp sense of humour and was the kindest soul. My deepest condolences to Alicia, Leon and Landon. What a terrible loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.”
