Brettonwood High champions mind and muscle with literacy and rugby
From lyrical expressions to line-outs, the week showcased Brettonwood High’s commitment to nurturing academic and athletic excellence, ensuring learners are empowered in every aspect of their growth.
BRETTONWOOD High School recently celebrated an action-packed week which was full of inspiration, energy, and education — both in the classroom and on the sports field.
Learners had the opportunity to grow not only academically but also athletically, thanks to the school’s Literacy Week activities and a powerful visit from the SA Rugby Legends Association. On the academic front, Literacy Week ran from Monday to Thursday, offering learners a series of creative and interactive activities aimed at fostering a love for language and expression.

Co-ordinated by Londeka Mgobhozi, Sudir Kuldip, and Alexis Maharaj, the week featured events that sparked imagination and built communication skills. The week kicked off with a fast-paced Tongue Twister Tournament, where Itumeleng Ramatholo claimed victory, with Sphilile Nkosi and Melokuhle Cele earning second and third place respectively. On Tuesday, learners combined storytelling and visual art in Paint and Tell Your Story, allowing for personal expression through creativity.

Wednesday brought a change of pace with an excursion to the Umbilo Library, where learners engaged in literacy enrichment programmes and explored new avenues for reading and research. Just as the learners were flexing their minds, they were also given the chance to develop physically and mentally on the rugby field.

The school hosted an unforgettable session with the SA Rugby Legends Association, featuring rugby icons Marius Schoeman, Brent Russell, and Neil Powell. The trio delivered motivational talks and ran a hands-on training session, sharing stories, techniques, and valuable life lessons with Brettonwood’s aspiring rugby players.
“Your presence and encouragement have inspired our learners both on and off the field,” said school management. “We are truly grateful for your dedication to developing the next generation of players.”
Adding to the day’s success, sports goods manufacturer Gilbert generously donated rugby balls and cones, a contribution the school described as “instrumental in supporting ongoing training and development”.
