Update: Endangered baboon spotted back at Durban harbour

The young baboon reported to be on the loose since yesterday has since been spotted back at the Durban Harbour, still trying to find its way to the rest of the pack.

A baby baboon suspected to have been on a shipping container from Cape Town surfaced in the Umbilo / Glenwood area yesterday. It was on the loose, “endangered and vulnerable”, and has been spotted at the Durban harbour, according to updates this morning.

A recording made to a local residents’ group indicated that the baboon was seen at the harbour, hiding by the dry docks, by the green building, still crying and trying to find its way to the rest of the pack.

Carol Boothe of Monkey Helpline Volunteers earlier said they could not be certain if the baboon escaped from the shipping container; however, she emphasised that the public must be on the lookout and report sightings to the Helpline.

“We were receiving several phone calls, including pranks and fake pictures, from the public. The last update was yesterday afternoon when it was spotted around the Glenwood / Umbilo area. It remains vulnerable to human attacks, muthi syndicates and territorial ambush by monkeys,” Boothe said.
