Nanny to appear in court for allegedly kidnapping baby in Durban
A nanny, charged with kidnapping a nine-month-old baby in Durban, will today appear before the Durban Magistrate's Court after she was arrested in Empangeni yesterday.
A 35-year-old nanny is set to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court today after she was arrested in Empangeni for allegedly kidnapping a child in Durban on Saturday.
“The mother of a nine-month-old child returned home in the afternoon on Saturday, and realised that the nanny and her son were not in the house. She contacted the nanny, asking about her whereabouts, as she had not consented to the child being taken anywhere outside the house. The nanny informed the mother of the child that she was somewhere at Empangeni, but could not provide a reasonable explanation why she had left and taken the child with her. Further communication between the mother and the nanny suggested that the mother needed to go alone to Empangeni to fetch her child,” said SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza.

After the matter was reported at Durban Central Police Station, all relevant police units assisted with the investigation.
“In the early hours of Sunday morning, a police operation was conducted at Empangeni, where the 35-year-old woman was arrested. The child was found unharmed and has been taken for precautionary medical examination. Further investigations into the matter revealed that the suspect had informed her boyfriend that the child was theirs, and that the boyfriend had been giving her R2500 monthly to take care of the child’s needs,” added Magwaza.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today (Monday).
