Fatal taxi crash in Durban CBD leaves one dead, two hospitalised

A man in his 60s was killed and two others injured after a multi-vehicle crash in Durban’s CBD early this morning. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, which involved a taxi, a bakkie, and a light motor vehicle.

ONE person was killed and two others injured in a horrific multi-vehicle crash at the corner of Anton Lembede Street and Dorothy Nyembe Street in Durban early this morning.

Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics confirmed the incident occurred shortly after 06:00 in the city centre. “Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage. A taxi, a bakkie, and a light motor vehicle had collided at the junction, with two vehicles leaving the roadway,” said Jamieson.

A man believed to be in his 60s was ejected from the taxi and sustained fatal injuries. “There was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased at the scene,” he said.

Two other individuals sustained moderate injuries and they were stabilised by Advanced Life Support paramedics before being transported to nearby hospitals for further care.

At this stage, the cause of the crash remains unclear. “The South African Police Service (SAPS) attended the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident,” added Jamieson.
