Over a million rand in drugs seized in North Beach raid
During last night's operation, law enforcement officers discovered a large quantity of illicit substances, and various items used for the manufacture and packaging of drugs.
IN a joint intelligence-driven operation conducted last night (October 15), members of the Metro Police Special Operations Directorate, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), and the SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) uncovered a makeshift drug laboratory at an apartment in North Beach, as well as a consignment of assorted drugs.
“During the operation, officers discovered a large quantity of illicit substances, including ecstasy, mandrax, crack cocaine, cannabis, and various items used for the manufacture and packaging of drugs. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is over R1m.

“A 33-year-old male suspect, believed to be a key supplier to the North Beach, South Beach, Point, and Durban Central areas, was arrested at the scene. Shockingly, the illegal activities were taking place in full view of his eight-year-old daughter, who was present in the apartment at the time of the raid. The suspect’s father was also arrested later in Springfield for his alleged links to the operation,” shared Colonel Boysie Zungu,
Spokesperson of Durban Metropolitan Police Service .
He highlighted that preliminary investigations revealed that the main suspect had previously been arrested earlier this year in connection with drug-related offences but was subsequently released on bail.

Colonel Zungu commended the operational teams for their dedication and seamless co-ordination, stating, “This successful operation sends a strong message to those involved in the drug trade, Metro Police and our partners remain relentless in dismantling criminal networks that endanger our communities. The recovery of such a large consignment demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in our city.”
North Beach CPF chairperson Mahomed Essa also commended the outstanding efforts of all law enforcement agencies involved in the drug bust. “The discovery of a drug laboratory operating within our community, especially in the presence of a young child, is deeply concerning. This arrest sends a strong message that criminal activity will not be tolerated in North Beach or surrounding areas. The North Beach CPF will continue to work closely with SAPS, Metro Police and specialised units to ensure that our neighbourhoods remain safe, drug-free, and family-friendly,” Essa added.
He urged residents to continue reporting suspicious behaviour through the proper channels.
The suspects are expected appear in court soon to face multiple charges related to drug possession, manufacturing, and dealing.
