Ward 33 boundary changes proposed ahead of 2026 elections

With the 2026 elections looming, Manor Gardens, Carrington Heights, and Glenmore could soon return to Ward 33 under a new demarcation proposal by eThekwini.

SIGNIFICANT changes are being proposed to the boundary lines of Ward 33 ahead of the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections.

Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher announced the proposed boundary adjustments to a packed Glenwood Preparatory School hall. Kristopher detailed the Municipal Demarcation Board’s (MDB) proposal to re-incorporate Manor Gardens, Carrington Heights, and Glenmore into Ward 33.

The areas were previously part of the ward but were later reassigned in earlier demarcation rounds. If approved, the change would see Ward 33 expand both geographically and administratively, with the number of voting stations increasing from eight to 10.

This redrawing of ward boundaries comes ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, prompting an urgent push for correct voter registration in alignment with the revised ward structure.

“The IEC on the Road to 2026 Local Election will see a massive registration drive leading up to these upcoming elections, leaving just on a year to get all those registered correctly according to where they reside and fall within the new demarcation,” said Kristopher.

The boundary shift has sparked mixed reactions, with some of the residents voicing optimism that bringing these suburbs back into Ward 33 could lead to more cohesive planning, especially around safety, infrastructure, and community development. Others voiced concerns about what the merger will mean for the ward.

Although the demarcation issues were top of the agenda, other topics discussed at the meeting were crime, infrastructure concerns, and problematic development. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the MDB and IEC, ensure their addresses are up to date, and reach out to Kristopher for any queries.
