Durban brings the heat at inaugural Basketball Wellness Day

Florida Road came alive with energy, hoops, and heart!

A HIGHLY-ENERGETIC community event that blended sport, wellness, and local culture was launched at Florida Road’s basketball court on Saturday, October 18.

The inaugural Basketball Wellness Day is the brainchild of local businessman Edward Padi Tettey, the owner of Col’Cacchio Florida Road. It was hosted in partnership with the Florida Road UIP, and the NPO Peace Players. The well-attended event went beyond basketball, offering food stalls, live music, and a variety of wellness stands where attendees could connect with physiotherapists, psychologists, accountants, and other professionals offering free advice and services.

Tettey was pleased with the turnout at the event and said the highlight of the day was a fast-paced three-on-three basketball tournament, with seven-minute match-ups featuring teams from across the Berea and greater Durban area.

He said, “For our first tournament we achieved a great turnout, with active participation from both players and spectators. The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing interest in participating in future tournaments. It was fulfilling to see local businesses, residents, and organisations working together to support the initiative.”

He added that the Basketball Wellness Day was not just about sports, it was also about building real connections. “To see local businesses, community members, and youth come together like this, it’s what makes Durban special. We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s about health, growth, and unity.”

Extending his gratitude to sponsors and attendees, Tettey said the goal is to give youth more opportunities to engage in healthy activities, promote awareness around physical and mental wellness, while strengthening the bonds among local businesses, residents, and NPOs.

“This first event was just the beginning,” said Tettey. “I plan to continue organising similar tournaments and wellness-focused initiatives to help grow community engagement.”
