Repairs begin on Albert Dlomo Road sinkhole
Repairs have finally begun on the Albert Dlomo Road sinkhole, with contractors estimating completion within four to six weeks.
AFTER months delays and awaiting the conclusion of the procurement process, work has commenced on the repairs to a sinkhole on Albert Dlomo Road.
The project is estimated to take around a month or two to complete. Contractors were on site early this morning digging the trench that will see the laying of new pipes after the old ones collapsed. Site manager Nkosinathi Mhlongo said they estimate that the project will take around four to six weeks.
He said the stormwater drain was damaged, which led to the collapse of the affected portion of the road. “What we are doing now is removing the damaged pipe. We will install a bigger pipe because the other one was too small and couldn’t handle the water volumes and this led to the damage that we are seeing,” said Mhlongo.
The affected part of the road is closed traffic. “It won’t stay closed for long, we just need to get the digging work done. It’s for safety reasons. Once that is complete the other side of the road will be open again,” said Mhlongo.

The commencing of the project was welcomed by Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher. She said, “After months of deliberation and procurement allocations – we will finally see the collapsed stormwater line replaced.”
She urged for patience while work is underway and made a plea for motorists to “use an alternative route during this repair”. “Engineers are predicting four weeks for the duration of this project. For any queries please do not hesitate to contact me,” added Kristopher.
