Suspect shot dead after gunfight with police in Durban CBD

An unsuccessful police car theft resulted in a fatal shooting of one suspect in the Durban CBD this morning.

EARLIER today, Thursday 13 November, Ensure Security reported that their teams responded to an incident along Joe Slovo Street near the Butterworth Hotel where a suspect was fatally shot during an armed confrontation with police.

According to information received, the suspect had been driving a vehicle believed to be stolen and wanted by authorities.

“When SAPS members attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect allegedly opened fire on police and attempted to evade arrest, using the vehicle in a manner that endangered officers and the public. The suspect later abandoned the vehicle and forcibly attempted to steal a SAPS patrol vehicle.

“Police pursued the suspect to the vicinity of the Butterworth Hotel, where further warnings were issued for him to surrender. The suspect reportedly continued firing at police officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. He was fatally wounded and declared deceased on the scene,” shared Kyle van Reenen, Ensure Security spokesperson.

The scene has since been handed over to SAPS for further investigation and processing.

Durban Central SAPS said, “Our members are still sorting the crime scene,  and full report will be made available later.”
