Unique maritime school breathes life into North Beach
KZN launches its first Maritime School of Excellence in Durban, with a specialised ocean-focused curriculum and industry-supported bursaries.
SOUTH Africa, specifically Durban’s maritime sector, generates billions of rands each year. As a step forward, the KZN Department of Education has thrown its financial support into the construction of the first of its kind KZN Maritime School of Excellence (MSoE) in North Beach, at the corner of Somtseu and Sylvester Ntuli Road.
It will offer a specialised maritime curriculum, including Marine Sciences, Maritime Economics, and Nautical Science, along with Coding and Robotics, focusing on grades eight to 12 for learners. It will begin with enrolling 80 full-time boarding students for Grade 8 in 2026.
Muzi Mahlambi, KZN DOE spokesperson, said this was a paying school; however, the department has structured a funding model designed to assist learners. “The school will offer industry-sponsored bursaries to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds, where parents will have to undergo an affordability assessment. Industry-sponsored scholarships will be awarded to learners who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements,” Mahlambi explained.

“The architectural style accommodates a balance of open spaces as well as privacy,” said Lead Design Architect Craig Moodley of GIARC Designs. “Public spaces encourage student interaction, while zones of learning, boarding and sporting activities all consider the essential needs of learners to promote a balanced, healthy student life.”
He added, “The built structures utilise a mix of various construction materials to enhance the aesthetics and exhibit modern architecture. Green technologies have been adopted where possible, and sustainable renewable solutions have also been included, such as solar mechanisms and rainwater harvesting. High-quality finishes enhance the aesthetics and are suitable for the coastal location.”

“As a resident and ratepayer of North Beach, I welcome the Maritime School of Excellence. It’s great to see opportunities for youth and skills development in our area. My only hope is that traffic and noise are well managed so it remains a positive addition to the neighbourhood,” shared Essa Mahomed.
Applications are open until November 21. For details visit kznadmissions.kzndoe.gov.za
