Bail-jumping uncle sought for attempted murder of nephew
Police are searching for a 29-year-old Sduduzo Mavundla who is accused of attacking his young nephew and disappearing while on bail.
KWAZULU-NATAL police are appealing for help in locating a man who allegedly strangled and stabbed his nine-year-old nephew before leaving him for dead in the Phola area of Chesterville on January 4, 2024.
Sduduzo Mavundla, 29, was out on bail when he failed to appear in court. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said a warrant of arrest has been issued for the accused and that a manhunt is underway for Mavundla.
“After investigations, Sduduzo was arrested but he was somehow released on bail and he has never presented himself before the courts,” said Netshiunda.
It is alleged that in January 2024 the nine-year-old victim was visiting his grandfather when he was attacked by his uncle. Netshiunda said Mavundla allegedly lured his nephew into the bushes under the pretence that he was going to buy him snacks.

“At the bushes, Sduduzo reportedly told the victim that he would show his father what he was made of because the victim’s father was disrespecting his (Sduduzo’s) father,” said Netshiunda.
“Sduduzo then started strangling the boy and stabbed him several times on the face and the boy lost conscious. After a while the boy somehow woke up and crawled to the road where he was assisted by passersby who took him to a hospital. By that time Sduduzo had already convinced his mother to report him missing at the Cato Manor police station.”
Following the incident Mavundla was arrested and granted bail. He has been in hiding since, leading to a warrant of arrest being issued in September 2024 by the courts. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is requested to call Investigating Officer Captain Ndlovu on 082 411 5609 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
