Mitchell Park Zoo reopens after repairs
Mitchell Park Zoo reopens after major repairs, welcoming families back with a special kids’ holiday programme.
FOLLOWING its temporary closure earlier this year, Mitchell Park Zoo has opened its gates to the public once again.
The over a century old Mitchell Park Zoo was closed in April amid public outcry over its deteriorating state. According to the City, the park had sustained significant damage during the recent floods. To mark this occasion and to showcase the refurbishment of the zoo, the eThekwini Municipality will be hosting a holiday programme for children, packed with outdoor fun and learning activities.
The programme will be held on Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, from 08:00 to 12:00. The event designed for kids aged eight to 13 years will include guided walks, show and tell sessions, eco games and many more engaging experiences.
“The City invites everyone to enjoy this iconic destination once again,” said municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana.

Among the refurbishment and upgrades was the renewal of flower beds, removal of hazardous playground equipment and the construction of new paving. “Mitchell Park Zoo temporarily closed earlier this year for essential repairs following flood damage, and is now fully restored and safe for visitors,” said Sisilana.
The zoo features a variety of animals, including tortoises, buck, crocodiles, raccoons, wallabies, monkeys, and a walk-through aviary with diverse bird species. The cost is only R16 per child, payable at the ticket office upon arrival. Parents are advised to pack a lunch and ensure children wear comfortable shoes.
