Laugh, dance, repeat: Kevin Fraser’s cultural pilgrimage hits SA

Comedian Kevin Fraser brings his Africa-inspired tour Heart of the World to Durban, celebrating the continent’s humour, culture and spirit.

SOUTH African comedian and global content sensation Kevin Fraser is gearing up for his landmark tour Heart of the World which he describes as a cultural pilgrimage through the pulse and spirit of Africa.

Fraser’s blend of stand-up, dance and character-driven satire has earned him a loyal international audience which stands to double as he tours SA. The Heart of the World, which will be on stage at Suncoast’s The Globe Theatre on December 12, draws inspiration from Fraser’s 2023 tour, Africa’s A Feeling, but takes a deeper dive into the continent’s humour, heart and contradictions.

“This was definitely inspired as a little bit of a love-child sequel,” said Fraser. “But, it’s mostly a tribute to our fruitful continent — a melting pot of culture, hilarity, satire, madness and all the things that make Africa the special place that it is.”

There will be plenty of laughs and shenanigans to keep you at the edge of your seat with laughter.

Fraser’s well-known performance style, which he calls “entertainment comedy”, fuses stand-up, dance and physical theatrics. “It was more a marriage of components that have been important to me — music, dance, comedy,” he said. “It just happened naturally and ended up becoming a signature style.”

The tour leans heavily into Fraser’s belief that Africans laugh not because life is easy, but because life belongs to them. “It’s definitely the spirit of Ubuntu — the sense of community and togetherness,” said Fraser. “We end up having to make a plan all the time, we are very driven people, all of us.”

Even with the chaos that ensues on stage, Fraser has always been able to maintain a respectful approach to cultural humour which will be on full display at his laugh out loud show. He said, “If you’re portraying a situation that genuinely happened, it doesn’t leave much room for misinterpretation. It’s always rooted in truth and delivered with heart.”

A spontaneous dance session might be in order to adhere to the vibe and spirit of Africa.

Apart from being a comedian, Fraser is also a DJ, having been controlling the decks since the age of 16 in Durban. “Music still forms a huge part of my stage identity. It gives the comedy an extra pulse,” said Fraser. “Even if you don’t relate directly, the humour lands.”

As he prepares for the tour, Fraser hopes the audience will walk away transformed after the show. “My hope is that people leave feeling like they can’t breathe from the laughter, but also happier and more alive. I want the show to take them to a place of pure hilarity and bring them back lighter,” said Fraser.

He added, “Home is where the heart is, and the heart is always here. Africa truly is the heart of the world.” Heart of the World is now touring across South Africa, with tickets available at kevinfraserofficial.com.
