Durban’s beach attractions buzz with holiday fun and activity

From sunrise strolls and surf sessions to aquarium adventures and nightlife, Durban’s coastline is the heart of KZN’s festive season buzz.

WITH summer in full swing and holidaymakers streaming into KwaZulu-Natal, Durban’s iconic beaches are once again at the centre of the city’s tourism revival.

From the north in Umhlanga to the Amanzimtoti in the south, eThekwini is well known for its beaches. Showcasing a variety of attractions catering to families, sport enthusiasts, and leisure seekers alike, the city’s beaches are full of entertainment

Starting with the popular Durban beaches, they are celebrated for the warm Indian Ocean waters, golden sand and for having Africa’s longest promenade, at a stretch of 8.5km. Spanning over 11 beaches, from Suncoast to uShaka, each has a distinct character that draws in visitors.

Holidaymakers looking to do more than just swimming at Durban’s beaches, here’s what they offer in terms of attraction and entertainment:

Umhlanga Beach: It houses the iconic Whalebone Pier and the scenic Umhlanga Rocks promenade. Its warm waters are the perfect temperature for swimming while the golden sand is ideal for a stroll, guided by the lighthouse. If you fancy a detour, you can explore lush forest, birdlife, and coastal landscapes on foot at Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Trail.

North Beach: It is home to the picturesque sunken gardens, amphitheatre and a giant picture frame which has witnessed many memories being captured. It is also popular with surfers and skaters, who enjoy the nearby Skate Park. There are a couple of restaurants to suit most taste buds with a nightlife that brings life to the nearby pier.

Durban beachfront: It is popular for having vibrant street vendors, craft sellers, and local performers along certain sections of the promenade. The Golden Mile is full of entertainment, kids’ swimming pools with slides, bike rentals, restaurants and bars. Residents and visitors can be seen cycling, skating, running, and strolling along the recently upgraded promenade.

uShaka Beach: It is known for uShaka Marine World, a sprawling marine-themed attraction featuring an aquarium, water park, animal encounters, and dining options. Its other attractions are the gondola rides, Segway and bike rental for the entire family.

Suncoast Beach: The Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World precinct is also seeing increased foot traffic. With its combination of dining, cinemas, gaming facilities, and access to quieter beachfront areas, the complex continues to attract both locals looking for a night out and tourists seeking convenience and variety.

As the festive season ramps up, tourism authorities expect footfalls to rise significantly, with the beachfront serving as a focal point for outdoor events, family gatherings, and summer entertainment. Whether you’re after a quiet sunrise walk, an adrenaline-pumping surf session, or a family day at one of the city’s top attractions, Durban’s beachfront offers something for everyone.
