St Peter’s Catholic Church appeals for support
Parishioners of St Peter’s Catholic Church in South Beach are calling on the community for assistance to help maintain and restore the 80-year-old Durban landmark, which continues to serve vulnerable families through charity, counselling and feeding schemes.
THE parishioners and leadership of St Peter’s Catholic Church in South Beach are appealing for help with maintaining and restoring the historic building which has been standing as a beacon of hope in Durban for over 80 years.
Serving the community of South Beach in various ways, the church at 360 Mahatma Gandhi Road has become a pillar of strength through feeding schemes, counselling and the charity work that they undertake as acts of kindness throughout the year.
Fundraisers and raffles.
Long-term parishioner Cecile Kathan said that throughout the year they host a number of fundraisers and raffles to help with the maintenance of the church. However, with snowballing costs in the upkeep of the church including utility bills and ageing infrastructure, they are no longer able to keep up with demand.
“My aim is to see the church completed, so many people rely on this church,” said Kathan. “Many struggling families come to us in need of help and with the grace of God, we do what we can for them. But our funds can only go so far because we also need to maintain the church.”

Kathan said with the help of donors and parishioners, St Peter’s has been able to keep the lights on and do some of the much-needed repairs to the church. She said there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, including the garden that holds the church’s grotto.
“We need assistance, in cash or kind. The donations will go towards doing up the wall, repainting and the replacing of the windows,” said Kathan who has been serving the church for over 35 years.
Praising Kathan’s efforts at fundraising while also emphasising the need for help, Father Richard Aluwizio Njanje said, “We are grateful for all the help that we have received and continue to receive. Hopefully, with further assistance, we can do more in maintaining the church.”
