Ratepayers group to contest upcoming local government elections
The eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement is calling for community members to stand as ward councillor candidates.
DURING a recent meeting eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement (ERPM) stood firm on contesting the municipal elections taking place some time this year. The group believes it could make a formidable impact as part of the City council.
The ERPM is calling for interested candidates who are keen to represent their wards as councillors.
Asad Gaffar, chairperson of the ERPM, said, “We looked at civic societies across the world, noting how little they could achieve from the outside. We need to step into that space. We want to be the adult in the room.

“The problem we have is leadership crisis. You might vote for the party, but not the person who represents the party in eThekwini council.”
“What began as a circulated charter aimed at aligning all political parties has developed into a political manifesto. The draft document would be subjected to vigorous discussions,” said Rose Cortes, the deputy chairperson of ERPM
“We hereby invite all individuals who would be interested to serve their community and help us fix eThekwini by putting yourselves forward to be Ward councillor candidates for ERPM in the upcoming Local Government Elections,” Gaffar concluded.
