ON Tuesday, the news of the passing of one of the eThekwini Council members was received with shock, not only by the council but also by the broader community and members of her political party, the ANC.

Cheryl Sisoka has been described as a “fierce, dedicated and robust member who was in the forefront of fighting poverty across the City”.

eThekwini Municipality Speaker, councillor Thabani Nyawose, shared, “On behalf of the eThekwini Council and the people of Durban, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the Sisoka family for their loss.

“We were still expecting a lot from her. We were hoping that she would recover and continue her good work as the Whip of the Community Services Committee, following her election as a councillor in the 2021 local government elections.
“We hope that the present generation of councillors will learn from her dedication to serving our people, hard work and discipline, as we strive to render the best service to eThekwini citizens.”

Mayor Cyril Xaba praised her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of residents across the City, describing her as a disciplined and principled leader. On behalf of the municipality, Xaba extended his deepest sympathies to Sisoka’s family.

“She was a disciplined councillor who always emphasised the importance of good governance and accountability. As a City, we have indeed been robbed of her skills and knowledge. We will sorely miss her robust debates during council meetings,” said Xaba.

Before her election to public office, she was a municipal employee, having worked in the Office of the Chairperson of Human Settlements and Infrastructure, and later in the Economic Development and Planning Unit. In addition to her role in the council, Sisoka was the deputy co-ordinator of the ANC eThekwini Region.
