Naval Base Durban marks milestone as new commander takes reins

Commander Alwani Kenneth Nemudivhiso has been formally appointed as Officer Commanding of Naval Depot Durban.

At the Naval Base Durban Sports Ground on Wednesday, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, the Chief of the South African Navy, presided over the Charge of Command Parade of Commander Alwani Kenneth Nemudivhiso, formally appointing him as Officer Commanding of Naval Depot Durban. eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba joined the ceremony.

The symbolic ceremony saw the official handover of the command of the Naval Depot Durban (NDD) to Nemudivhiso, who reportedly brings a wealth of experience, having served at various levels of the Navy.

Vice Admiral Lobese conveyed his appreciation for Commander Nemudivhiso’s leadership and commitment since the unit’s inception. He commended the Commander’s role in laying the organisational and operational foundations of NDD and, with evident pride, formally charged him as the first Officer Commanding of the depot.

He emphasised that effective logistics and support are indispensable to operational credibility at sea, noting that a capable depot structure directly translates into responsiveness, endurance, and combat readiness.

The Navy Base Durban shared, “The appointment represents both a personal achievement for Commander Nemudivhiso and a significant step in strengthening the Navy’s logistics architecture in Durban, an enduring investment in readiness, continuity, and maritime security.”

Established in October 2021, the unit functions as a central logistics and sustainment hub, incorporating Sub-Depot Stores, the Divisional Bulk Ration Depot, and the Divisional Armament Depot. Collectively, these capabilities underpin the reliable provisioning, maintenance, and readiness of naval assets operating from the eastern seaboard.
