Suspected Umbilo drunk drivers to face the music in court

At least 30 Umbilo motorists are among 242 arrested for drunk driving during a major weekend roadblock operation across Durban.

AT least 30 motorists from Umbilo will be among 242 set to appear in Durban courts today, for allegedly driving under the influence.

The motorists were arrested in a major crackdown by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Department of Transport, SAPS, and Durban Metro Police over the weekend. The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma warned motorists that the operations were not only limited to the festive period.

He said, “Operations are being intensified with RTI protecting innocent road users. The RTI Team is very firm and decisive against drunk driving.”

Among the 242 arrested in the roadblocks, are 30 motorists from Durban Central, 45 from Umhlanga, 48 from KwaMashu, 34 from KwaDabeka and 33 from Inanda. Duma was full of praise for law enforcement who ensured the safety of motorists and passengers on the road.

“We pay tribute to Durban Metro and SAPS for working in partnership with RTI as part of cleaning up our road networks,” said Duma.

Durban Metro Police Service confirmed that this weekend’s roadblock also netted one of their own. In a post on their social media page, Durban Metro Police said, “During the operation, one of the suspects was identified as a DMPS member and was arrested. This reinforces the principle that no one is above the law, and all offenders are treated equally, regardless of position or affiliation.

“DMPS remains committed to zero tolerance on drunk driving and will continue to work with law enforcement partners to ensure safer roads for all road users. Drinking and driving is a serious offence and will not be tolerated.”

The officer is expected to be among those lining up in the dock today.
