Level 4 storm alert: eThekwini braces for flooding, damaging winds and hail
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning for eThekwini and KZN from February 12 to Friday.
ETHEKWINI is bracing itself for impact after a Level 4 severe thunderstorm and heavy rain warning was issued for KwaZulu-Natal by the South African Weather Service, from this evening (February 12) until Friday.
The City said that forecasts indicate severe widespread showers and intense thunderstorms which pose a serious risk to life, property, and infrastructure. Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said these are conditions likely to include heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds, and hail.
“The anticipated rainfall may lead to flooding on roads, bridges, and low-lying settlements, while poor visibility and slippery surfaces will make driving hazardous,” said Sisilana.

Residents living in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their families. “Informal and mud-based structures are particularly vulnerable to damage,” said Sisilana as she warned that eThekwini might not be spared from the heavy rain. “The municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and fully mobilised to respond swiftly to any incidents.”
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance, as deteriorating road conditions and compromised visibility increase the risk of accidents. “The public is strongly advised to stay indoors, where possible, and avoid unnecessary travel. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to cross swollen rivers or streams, especially where water levels exceed ankle height,” said Sisilana.
Although the City will remain on high alert, Sisilana said the warning remains subject to change as conditions evolve. “eThekwini Municipality will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely communication to safeguard residents,” she added.
For emergencies, the City’s Disaster Management Centre can be contacted on 031 361 0000.
